Wojtek Gierlach graduated at the Warsaw Chopin Music Academy, with Professor Kazimierz Pustelak, receiving Magna cum Laude as the distinction as the best student.He has been awarded with important prices at international vocal competitions: Ada Sari 1999 (first award); Bilbao 2000 (second), the main award in Milan 2001 (Premio Caruso); and Francesc Viñas in Barcelona 2004 (third award).He made his debut in 1999 at Warsaw Chamber Opera singing Haendel’s Imeneo title role; in this theater he also performed the role of Don Giovanni, in Mozart’s Don Giovanni. He also appeared in the role of Leporello in at Warsaw Grand Theatre and at Nico Opera in Cape Town. He performed Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro at Teatro Piccini di Bari and Argenio in Imeneo at Opera Ireland in Dublin.A Rossinian singer par excellence, he played Mustafa in L’Italiana in Algeri at the Teatro Alighieri di Ravenna; Assur in Semiramide at Pisa’s Teatro Verdi, Alidoro in La Cenerentola at Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and at the Stadttheater in Klagenfurt. He played Lord Sidney and Don Profondo in Il Viaggio a Reims at Warsaw’s Grand Theater, conducted by Alberto Zedda, and at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro. He sang Don Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Pharaoh in Mosè in Egitto, and the Governor in Le Comte Ory at Wildbad’s Belcanto Opera Festival, where he also took part, as Mirteo, in a live recording of Meyerbeer’s Semiramide, conducted by Richard Boninge, and as Mustafà in Luigi Mosca’s L’italiana in Algeri.Some of his other most remarkable performances include his role as Colline in La Bohème at Warsaw’s Grand Theater; as Salieri in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Mozart and Salieri at the Teatro Filarmónica de Oviedo, and more recently at A Coruña Mozart Festival in the role of Commendatore in Ramón Carnicer’s Il dissoluto punito, once more conducted by Zedda. Wojtek Gierlach has also collaborated with several orchestras, taking part in many concerts both in his home country and across Europe. For instance, he sang Bach’s Mass in B minor, conducted by Helmuth Rilling, and Haydn’s Harmoniemesse for soloists, chorus, organ and orchestra in B flat major, conducted by Matthias Bamert, at the Warsaw’s Philarmonic, as well as Mozart’s Coronation Mass with Crakow’s Philharmonic Orchestra, with Jan Krenz’s conducting, during the celebrations of the conposer’s 200th birth anniversary. Salieri’s The Passion of Jesus Christ, which he performed with I Solisti Veneti, conducted by Claudio Scimone (the concert was broadcast by RAI – Italian Television), Rossini’s Stabat Mater with Orquesta del Principado de Asturias, once more with Alberto Zedda as conductor and Arvo Pärt’s Passion in Prague’s Spring Festival, are all part of his oratorio repertoire. During the last season, he has performed several times in Don Giovanni in Japan, in the role of Don Giovanni, Leporello in Warsaw, L’Italiana in Algeri at Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon (Mustafà) under Maestro Donato Renzetti, The magic flute (Sprecher) in A Coruña, Turandot (Timur) in Tenerife, as well as a series of oratorio concerts in Europe.
Mr. Gierlach recorded for NAXOS Le Comte Ory and Ciro in Babilonia by Rossini, and Meyerbeer’s Semiramide conducted by Richard Bonynge. For the IBERAUTOR label, he has recorded Il dissoluto punito by Ramón Carnicer, conducted by Alberto Zedda, and Luigi Mosca’s L’Italiana in Algieri for the BONGIOVANNI label.Between his forthcoming engagements stand out: Don Giovanni at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor (Raimondo) and Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann (four diabolic roles) at the Warsaw’s Grand Theater, and Rossini’s Il Viaggio a Reims, playing Lord Sidney in Marseille, Bourdeaux, Toulousse, and others.
