Maria Luigia Borsi was born just south of Rome in a small town called Sora. Her love for opera started before she even began to speak.
Ms. Borsi’s activities in 2007 include LA BOHÈME (Mimì) at the Festival Pucciniano of Torre del Lago, LA TRAVIATA (Violetta), TURANDOT (Liù) at the Gran Teatro La Fenice in Venice, MEDEA (Glauce) at Teatro Massimo di Palermo, a tour in Japan with violinist Brad Repp and two recitals in Italy with José Carreras. Ms. Borsi will further her collaborations with José Carreras and violinist Brad Repp while united in a tour in China dedicated to the opening ceremonies of the Special Olympics. On two occasions she will be soprano soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in Rome under the direction of Lorin Maazel. Borsi will also perform Verdi’s Requiem under the direction of Lorin Maazel in Casablanca, Busseto, Isolino, Venice and Jerusalem.
In March 2008 she will perform Mahlers’s 2nd Symphony in Rome and Milan under the direction of Zubin Mehta. In 2009 she will sing in DON GIOVANNI (Donna Elvira) in Tel Aviv also under the direction of Zubin Mehta.
Recently Ms. Borsi performed in LA TRAVIATA (Violetta) at the Opernhaus theatre in Zürich directed by Maestro Paolo Arrivabeni with Giorgio Zancanaro, Renato Bruson, Giuseppe Sabatini and José Cura. She also sang the roles of Micaela CARMEN at the Arena di Verona with stage direction by Franco Zeffirelli and Mimì LA BOHÈME at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna. Maria Luigia has performed recitals with some of the worlds greatest singers like Leo Nucci, José Carreras and Renato Bruson.
In 2004 Ms. Borsi performed the role of Liù in TURANDOT at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan directed by Carlo Rizzi, CARMEN (Micaela) at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo directed by Maestro Alain Lombard. In the same year she also inaugurated the Gran Teatro La Fenice in Venice interpreting the role of Violetta in LA TRAVIATA under the direction of Maestro Lorin Maazel with stage direction by Robert Carsen. She also interpreted the arias of “Mimi” and “Liù” at the Puccini Festival at Torre del Lago during a special concert entitled "Le Donne di Giacomo Puccini" (The Women of Giacomo Puccini) with the extraordinary participation of tenor Placido Domingo.
In 2002 Ms. Borsi won first prize in the “San Remo International Vocal Competition” earning the title: “Best Opera Singer of 2002”. After this magnificent victory she was invited to perform over 70 concerts with tenor Andrea Bocelli in Europe, the United States, Asia and in Australia receiving fantastic reviews from the public and the critics.
Ms. Borsi completed her formal musical studies with the highest honors from the “P. Mascagni Music Institute” in Livorno under the guidance of the Romanian soprano Lucia Stanescu.
